Why did I wake up determined to conquer my toddler's crazy closet?
Quick back story: Earlier this month, we had a storage cabinet fall over and it just so happened to hold our catch-all junk drawer- yikes.
Luckily nobody was hurt, and we decided to stash that drawer in Eden’s closet and then quickly forgot about it...that is until each morning rolled around and I was frustrated trying to get in her closet and praying I could easily grab a matching top and bottom.
And, to be honest, Eden is at the age where she loves making choices and that includes deciding on her clothes and accessories so I knew something had to change with our current set up.
This morning, I decided it was time so I made the closet organization an activity for her and I to do together. We grabbed some bins and bags and tackled it.
I started out by taking out all of the clothes she's outgrown. I'm saving them in case we have another girl in the future. It is WILD how quickly they outgrow their clothes- just another reason I love shopping secondhand thrift stores!
Once we got out all of the clothes that don't fit, we could really assess what we were working with.
I wanted to create systems that had easy upkeep AND allowed Eden to be involved. I also wanted a way for my husband or I to walk in and know exactly what outfits go together so it wouldn't be a daily hunt to see if we could find a matching set.
I decided on using a small laundry basket that I had picked up at Dollar Tree for her shoes. This allows her to get shoes out by herself and put them away independently at the end of the day. That was an organizational win!
I had also just washed clothes for her so I hung those up. Once I did, I could take a quick visual inventory of what she had. Since Eden was having fun with me while I organized, I decided to take it one step further in an attempt to make our mornings even smoother. I paired up matching sets and put them in a hanging closet organizer similar to this one:
And parents of littles know that one of the most frequently misplaced items of clothing is their LITTLE SOCKS! So I'm including a pair of socks in each of those cubbies so we're not scrambling to find a matching sock when we're trying to get out the door! Around here, we do whatever we can do proactively to bring more peace to our mornings.
In less than 30 minutes, I completely transformed my daughter's closet to work for her. Would these steps help your toddler (and your sanity?)
Not only will this give your toddler more independence to take out and put away their clothes and accessories, but it will give your whole family more time in the mornings instead of hunting for that lone toddler sock. :)
